What is an iPhone Backup File?

Find out what an iPhone backup is, and if you have one!

Put quite simply an iPhone backup file is a copy of the data on your iPhone. Each time you sync your iOS Apple device (iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch) to iTunes or your iCloud account, an automatic backup is made (unless you have turned this feature off). If you have an iPhone backup file generated in iTunes, you can find this file manually here:

Windows XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

Windows Vista, Windows 7 and 8:

C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

Mac OS X:

~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/

What are iPhone backup files for?

Generally speaking iTunes and iCloud backup files ensure that you have a copy of your data to restore from. Create an iTunes backup

Connect iPhone to WiFi > Open Settings > iCloud > Select backup or Storage &Backup

Transferring data from one device to another

Important information to note:

If you were to restore a device using a backup from a different Apple device the (for example, restoring an iPhone from an iPad backup file), not all data will be transferred. While contacts, messages and notes will be copied over, media files such ad photos, voice memos, message attachments and other types of app data will not transfer.

If you have synced your iPhone to iTunes at some point in the past, you will have at least one iPhone backup saved to your computer or laptop. To extract it follow the instructions here:
