Find out how to recover deleted WhatsApp messages on iPhone with our easy-to-follow guide. You can also use these methods to retrieve chats or photos that have been lost for any other reason. We have some of our most important conversations on WhatsApp, so don’t let them stay lost forever!
Method 1: Recover WhatsApp messages from iCloud
WhatsApp messages and attachments are not backed up by default on iPhone, but there is an option to automatically back up WhatsApp data to iCloud. If you opted into this function before your data was lost, you should be able to see a backup in ‘WhatsApp’ > ‘Settings’ > ‘Chats’ > ‘Chat Backup’.
In order to restore this iCloud backup file, you will need to delete WhatsApp from your iPhone then reinstall it from the App Store. Please note that you will lose any messages sent since the backup. Alternatively, you can use our software to view WhatsApp messages stored in historical iCloud backups, then save them to your computer for safe-keeping:
Download Enigma Recovery
Using your computer, download Enigma Recovery from this website. The free trial will allow you to view the number of WhatsApp messages that can be retrieved.
Recover from my iCloud
Once the software has been installed, open Enigma Recovery to the start page. Select ‘Recover from my iCloud’ and log in — for added security, we’re compatible with Apple’s two-factor authentication.
Choose iPhone backup
Select the iCloud backup you would like to recover WhatsApp messages from, using the date column to help you.
Scan for WhatsApp messages
From the data type item menu, choose to scan for WhatsApp and the software will scan your iCloud backup file and retrieve WhatsApp chats.
View WhatsApp messages
To view your retrieved WhatsApp messages after the scan, click onto the WhatsApp tab.
Save WhatsApp messages
To save your extracted WhatsApp messages, go to ‘Export & Restore’ > ‘Export to desktop’ > select location in ‘Browse’ > ‘Export’. You will need to the full version of Enigma Recovery.
Method 2: Recover WhatsApp messages from iTunes
iTunes automatically includes WhatsApp messages and photos when backing up your iPhone. You can find out when the last backup was taken, and how to restore it, on our iTunes recovery page. Please note that an iTunes restore will overwrite existing data on your iPhone, meaning you will lose data created since the backup — and not just on WhatsApp.
To avoid this problem, you can recover WhatsApp messages and photos from an iTunes backup file using Enigma Recovery. This means you can restore data without wiping your iPhone — you’ll also have the option to save the files to your computer.
Download Enigma Recovery
Using your laptop or desktop computer download Enigma Recovery from this website. The free trial will allow you to view the number of WhatsApp messages that can be recovered.
Recover from my iTunes
Once the software has been installed, open Enigma Recovery to the start page. Select ‘Recover from my iTunes’. Select the iTunes backup you would like to recover WhatsApp messages from, using the date column to help you.
Scan and view WhatsApp data
From the data type item menu, choose to scan for WhatsApp and the software will retrieve data from your iTunes backup. Once the scan is complete, you can view the recovered files in the WhatsApp tab.
Save WhatsApp data on your computer
To save extracted WhatsApp messages and photos to your computer, go to ‘Export & Restore’ > ‘Export to desktop’ > select location in ‘Browse’ > ‘Export’. You will need to the full version of Enigma Recovery.
Restore WhatsApp data to your iPhone
Exported WhatsApp photos can be transferred from your computer to your device via iCloud or iTunes. You can get your deleted WhatsApp messages back on your iPhone via our free app: download Restore from the App Store, connect your iPhone to your computer, go to ‘Export & Restore’ > ‘Restore’ on the full version of Enigma Recovery, and select the data you’d like to transfer.
Method 3: Recover WhatsApp messages without a backup
If you are using an older version of WhatsApp (pre-v2.16.3), you can use Enigma Recovery to recover deleted WhatsApp messages from your iPhone and view them on your PC or Mac. Simply follow the instructions below.
If you are using WhatsApp v2.16.3 or later, you can use our software to transfer existing messages from your iPhone to your computer, but you will not be able to recover lost or deleted messages using this method. This is because WhatsApp began encrypting messages in v2.16.3.
To find out what version of WhatsApp you have, go to ‘WhatsApp’ > ‘Settings’ > ‘Help’ and your version number will appear at the top.
Download Enigma Recovery
To complete this tutorial, you will need the full unlocked version of Enigma Recovery. Download the software to your Mac or PC.
Connect your iPhone
To allow the software to transfer iPhone data to your computer, connect your phone to the computer via a USB cable. You may need to enable the connection on your iPhone by tapping ‘Trust’ on the popup notification.
Start the scan
From the dataset menu, select ‘WhatsApp’ to indicate you would like to copy WhatsApp messages to your computer. Now start the scan.
View and export WhatsApp data
The software will now scan your phone for deleted and existing WhatsApp data. Once complete, you can view the recovered messages and photos in the WhatsApp tab. To save the files to your computer, go to ‘Export & Restore’ > ‘Export to desktop’ > select location in ‘Browse’ > ‘Export’.
View recovered data on your iPhone
To add exported WhatsApp images to your iPhone Photos app, simply transfer the files from your computer via iCloud or iTunes. If you would like the option to view recovered WhatsApp messages on your iPhone, you can do so using our free Restore app. Simply install the app on your device, connect to your computer using a USB cable, then go to ‘Export & Restore’ > ‘Restore’ and select the files you need in Enigma Recovery.
You should now be able to view recovered WhatsApp messages on your iPhone (in the WhatsApp or Restore app) and/or on your computer. If you haven’t already, create a backup and review your backup settings to help secure your data for the future.
