How to recover deleted photos from iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch

We take some of our most precious photos on our iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices, so it can be devastating when they’re lost or deleted. But don’t worry, because we’re going to explain how to recover deleted photos with or without a backup. You can also get the photos back if you no longer have your device.

If you’re a victim of wider data loss — perhaps because of a failed iOS update or a lost, stolen or broken device — we can also help you recover videos, contacts, text messages and more.

Method 1: Recover photos from the Recently Deleted album

When you delete a photo from your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch camera roll, it’s automatically moved to the ‘Recently Deleted’ album. It stays here for 30 days or until it is manually deleted.

Here’s how to recover a photo from the Recently Deleted album:

Here’s how to recover a photo from the Recently Deleted album:

  1. Open the Photos app on your Apple iOS device.
  2. Go to ‘Albums’ then ‘Recently Deleted’.
  3. To recover…
    • a. … a single photo, tap the photo then ‘Recover’.
    • b. … multiple photos, tap ‘Select’, select the photos, then tap ‘Recover’.
    • c. … all photos, tap ‘Recover All’, then confirm.

Method 2: Recover photos from an iTunes or iCloud backup

If your photos were backed up to iTunes or iCloud before they were deleted, you can restore this backup file in order to recover them. The downside is that you will have to wipe existing data on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch first, meaning that you will lose any changes made since the backup.

If you want to avoid a full device restore, or aren’t sure which backup file contains the photos you need, you can extract your photos from iTunes using Enigma Recovery, instead. You can then restore them to your Photos app without making any other changes to your device.

This method also makes it possible to recover deleted photos when you no longer have an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to restore them to.
