Lots of us store important information in Apple’s Notes app, so it can be extremely stressful when something goes wrong. But don’t worry, because we’re going to explain how to recover lost or deleted notes on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch — with or without a backup, and with or without the device.
How to recover notes from the Recently Deleted folder
If you are using iCloud notes, when you delete a note from the Notes app on iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, it’s automatically sent to the Recently Deleted folder. Unless it is manually deleted from this folder in the meantime, you have 30 days to recover it.
Open the Notes app on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch and go to the Folders view (you might need to tap the back button in the top-left corner a couple of times).
Tap ‘Edit’ and select the note(s) you would like to recover.
Select ‘Move To…’ and tap the folder you would like to move the deleted note(s) back to.
When a note is automatically or manually deleted from the Recently Deleted folder, it goes into the device’s database until it is overwritten. If you’re quick, you can use Enigma Recovery software to retrieve notes from this database.
How to restore notes from iCloud or iTunes
If you have an iTunes or iCloud backup containing the notes you need, you can restore the backup to your device in order to get them back:
Unfortunately, it is not possible to restore deleted notes only using this method — you have to restore the entire backup file. This means that you will lose data and settings created since the backup was taken.
It’s not possible to preview your backup on iCloud or iTunes either, so, if you’re not certain which file contains your deleted notes, restoration is risky.
The alternative is recovering notes from iCloud or iTunes with Enigma Recovery. Our software allows you to retrieve notes from any backup, then save them to your computer and restore them to your device — without any additional data loss. Read the next section to find out more.
How to recover notes with Enigma Recovery
Enigma Recovery allows you to recover deleted notes from an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, or from an iCloud or iTunes backup. You can then save them to your computer and restore them to your device.
Our software is the best recovery option if:
- Your notes aren’t in the Recently Deleted folder and you don’t have a backup
- Your notes are backed up in iTunes or iCloud but you don’t want to restore the full backup
- You think your notes might be backed up in iTunes or iCloud but aren’t certain
- You have an iTunes or iCloud backup but don’t have a device to restore it to
- You want to easily save notes to your computer in CSV, XML, PDF or XLSX format
If one of the above describes you, follow the instructions below to recover your lost or deleted notes:
Download our software
Download, install and open Enigma Recovery on your Mac or Windows computer. It’s totally free to try out.
Choose your recovery method
Select ‘Recover from my iOS device/iTunes/iCloud’ then follow any onscreen instructions to connect your device or account. If retrieving from a backup, you will need to select which file to scan — use the date column to help you.
Start the scan
View recovered notes
Once the scan is complete, you can preview a selection of recovered notes in the corresponding tab. To view everything and export or restore files, you’ll need to upgrade to the full version of Enigma Recovery.
Export your notes
To save notes to your computer in CSV, XML, PDF or XLSX format, go to ‘Export & Restore’ > ‘Export to desktop’ > choose the location ‘Browse’ > ‘Export’.
Restore notes to your device
The easiest way to restore notes to your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch is via our Restore app. Download the app, connect the device to your computer with a USB cable, then go to ‘Export & Restore’ > ‘Restore to Device’ on Enigma Recovery. Once the transfer is complete, you can view the notes in the Restore app and, if you wish, copy and paste them across to the Notes app.
Now that you have recovered deleted notes from your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, iTunes or iCloud, make sure that they remain safe and sound by creating a backup.
