How to recover deleted notes on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch

Lots of us store important information in Apple’s Notes app, so it can be extremely stressful when something goes wrong. But don’t worry, because we’re going to explain how to recover lost or deleted notes on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch — with or without a backup, and with or without the device.

If you have been affected by wider data loss, perhaps because your device was water-damaged or stolen, we can also help you recover other types of iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch data.

How to recover notes from the Recently Deleted folder

If you are using iCloud notes, when you delete a note from the Notes app on iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, it’s automatically sent to the Recently Deleted folder. Unless it is manually deleted from this folder in the meantime, you have 30 days to recover it.

  1. Open the Notes app on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch and go to the Folders view (you might need to tap the back button in the top-left corner a couple of times).

Open notes app on your iphone screen
  1. Open the ‘Recently Deleted’ folder and search for the note(s) that you would like to recover. If you do not see them here, you will need to try restoring a backup or using Enigma Recovery instead.

Search for notes in recently deleted folder
  1. Tap ‘Edit’ and select the note(s) you would like to recover.

Edit and select the note you wish to recover
  1. Select ‘Move To…’ and tap the folder you would like to move the deleted note(s) back to.

Select the folder you would to move the deleted note too

When a note is automatically or manually deleted from the Recently Deleted folder, it goes into the device’s database until it is overwritten. If you’re quick, you can use Enigma Recovery software to retrieve notes from this database.

How to restore notes from iCloud or iTunes

If you have an iTunes or iCloud backup containing the notes you need, you can restore the backup to your device in order to get them back:

Unfortunately, it is not possible to restore deleted notes only using this method — you have to restore the entire backup file. This means that you will lose data and settings created since the backup was taken.

It’s not possible to preview your backup on iCloud or iTunes either, so, if you’re not certain which file contains your deleted notes, restoration is risky.

The alternative is recovering notes from iCloud or iTunes with Enigma Recovery. Our software allows you to retrieve notes from any backup, then save them to your computer and restore them to your device — without any additional data loss. Read the next section to find out more.
