We keep some of our most important files on our iPhones, from family photos to business contacts, so data loss can be extremely upsetting. But don’t worry because, as long as you have your device or a backup, iPhone data recovery is possible.

If your iPhone is broken, stolen or lost, you can recover files from an iTunes or iCloud backup. You have two options:

If you still have your iPhone, there are three ways to restore lost or deleted files:

  1. Restore an iTunes/iCloud backup, overwriting existing iPhone data in the process
  2. Extract then restore files from your backup, eliminating the need to overwrite existing iPhone data

  3. Recover iPhone files without a backup by extracting data from your device’s database

How to restore an iPhone backup

By restoring an iPhone backup, you are able to recover all the content and settings from the time the backup was taken. See our instructions for:

This is the best iPhone data recovery method if you have purchased a new device after yours was broken, lost or stolen.

However, if you are trying to restore lost or accidentally deleted files to the same iPhone, it’s important to note that a full device restore will overwrite all existing device data. So, you might be better off extracting files from your backup or recovering files from your iPhone’s database, instead.

How to recover files from an iPhone backup

You can recover text messages, photos, contacts and more from an iPhone backup — without conducting a full iPhone restore — by using Enigma Recovery. This is useful if you want to avoid overwriting existing device data, or you no longer have access to your iPhone. You can then save the recovered files to your computer or restore them to your device.

See our instructions for:

How to recover iPhone files without a backup

Our iPhone data recovery software is able to extract certain types of lost or deleted files from your device’s database, meaning that it is possible to recover iPhone data without a backup. You can then save the recovered files to your computer or restore them to your iPhone.

  1. Download, install and open Enigma Recovery on your Mac or Windows PC. Select ‘Recover from my iOS device’.
  2. Use a cable to connect your iPhone to your computer. You may need to ‘Trust’ the computer on your phone.
  3. Select the data type(s) that you would like to recover then ‘Start scan’. The length of the scan depends on the amount of data, but is typically a few minutes.
  4. Once the scan is complete, you can preview recovered files. To view, search and filter all recovered data, upgrade to the full version of Enigma Recovery.
  5. If you have the full version of Enigma Recovery, you can now save or restore your recovered iPhone files.

How to export recovered iPhone data

Once you have recovered files from your iPhone or backup using Enigma Recovery, you can export them to a destination of your choice using the ‘Export & Restore’ menu. This makes it easy to back up, transfer and print your data.

The possible file formats depend on the data type:

How to restore recovered iPhone data

After recovering iPhone data with Enigma Recovery, either from the device or a backup, there are four main ways to restore it to your iPhone:

  1. Enigma Recovery > Restore app: You can view recovered calendar events, call history, contacts, iMessages, notes, text messages and WhatsApp messages via our free Restore app. Simply download the app on your iPhone, plug your phone into your computer, and go to ‘Export & Restore’ > ‘Restore to device’ on Enigma Recovery.

  2. Restore app > native app: Using data that has already been transferred, you can create a new calendar event or contact within the Restore app. Notes can simply be copy-and-pasted across.

  3. Exported file > native app: Certain data types can be exported in a file format supported by their native app, allowing them to be imported back to their original place.

  4. Exported file > other app: You can find an iOS-friendly app or online tool to support any of the exportable file types (CSV/XML/PDF/VCF/XLSX/HEIC/JPEG/MOV/MP4). This means there’s always a way to access recovered data from your iPhone.

What’s next?

Whether you lost data due to a failed iOS update, water damage, accidental deletion, or any other reason, you should have been able to successfully recover your iPhone data using one of the methods above. If not, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our friendly support team.

To reduce the risk of data loss in the future, we’d recommend reviewing your iPhone backup settings. If you downloaded the full version of Enigma Recovery, don’t forget that you can continue using all of the software features to manage your iOS data.
