Well the good news is, if you are reading this on your device you’ve managed to get an internet connection from somewhere, even if it’s not your iPhone. It’s unfortunate, but many iPhone users experience problems connecting their iPhone to a Wi-Fi connection after upgrading to iOS 7. The funny thing is, others experience connectivity issues after skipping an iOS update!

If you’re iPhone won’t connect to Wi-Fi  and the Wi-Fi button in your Settings appears to be greyed out and unresponsive, your problem may be an overheated Wi-Fi chip.

There are a number of tips and tricks you can try to get your iPhone to connect to Wi-Fi. However before you start drilling your way down the list, check and see if other devices are connecting. This way you can determine whether there is a problem with your Wi-Fi router.

(If the router is the problem, try switching it off along with your iPhone for 30 seconds. Then turn them both back on and see if the phone connects to the Wi-Fi. If it doesn’t, read on!)

Here is a list of Enigma’s top tips, ranging from the fairly simple to, the more complex iPhone Wi-Fi fixes. After each step try and connect your phone again. If it still won’t connect to the Wi-Fi, move on to the next step.

Restart your iPhone

Hold the sleep/wake button on the top of your phone down until you see the option to slide to power off. Now drag the slider to turn off.

Airplane Mode off.

Go to Settings, make sure the Airplane Mode is switched off. If this hasn’t done the trick, we recommend that, you perform an iTunes backup of your data before you go any further, just to be safe.

Forget Network

Go to Settings, General, Wi-Fi, select your Wi-Fi and choose ‘Forget this Network’. Now try finding the Wi-Fi connection again from scratch.

Reset iPhone

Hold the Sleep/Wake button as well as the Home button down for about 10 seconds, or until you see the Apple logo appear.

Update iOS Software

Check to see if you have upgraded your iPhone to the latest software setting. Go to Settings, General and select Software Update. At this point, if your iPhone still won’t connect to Wi-Fi  you must be getting pretty frustrated. Perhaps it will help to know that we’re all rooting for you. Keep going!

Reset Network Settings

Go to Settings, and ensure that, Airplane Mode is off. Then open General, Reset and select Reset Network Settings. (It’s important to know that the iPhone will now remove all saved Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairing records, VPN and APN settings).

Reset All Settings

Go to Settings, General, Reset and select Reset All Settings. (Please note that if you Reset All Settings on your iPhone, you will not lose any apps but your app settings will be removed).

WILD CARD

No luck? You may want to try this last tip but be warned it…is a Wild Card. Why is it a Wild Card? Because it involves purposely over heating your iPhone and sticking it in the freezer afterwards!

This tip has worked for a lot of iPhone users with iPhone Wi-Fi connectivity problems. However others have strayed away from this method for fear of damaging the internal components of the iPhone. The choice it entirely yours, if you’re in for taking a risk proceed:

Blow-dry? Freeze

Run a blow-dryer over your iPhone for about a minute or until you see a message saying your iPhone is over heated. Then turn the phone off, place in a freezer bag and leave it in the freezer for about 10 minutes. *Please note there is a chance this method may cause potential damage to your phone.

    nothing worked! I went through all the options except the freezing one, and I still get: Unable to connect to (whatever) Network – and that is any network. AAAARGH

    my phone will connect intermittently and then disconnects. system has been updated. this only happens at home. at the same time, other family members have no problem connecting.

    None of these work what the heck as of this point I don’t know what to do I have restated it at least a billion times and I have called and they won’t help as of this point it seems like my phone is just shutting down on me and I just got this newer version of the iPhone so thanks for the help I guess but it doesn’t work :((

  • My iPhone Wi-Fi won’t turn on, the button is grayed out not giving me an option. I have done all of your tips and I do see that the iOS does need an update, but I can’t update it without internet in this case there’s no Wi-fi so how do I fix one without the other. And the Apple website is not helpful at all.

If you have a computer with an internet connection, then it is possible to update your iOS version without Wi-fi, by using iTunes instead. Simply connect your device to iTunes, and once the device has been recognised, click ‘Check for Update’. When updating your device, we would always recommend that you always make a backup of your device using iTunes or iCloud before you update the iOS version.
