With over a billion users, WhatsApp is the most widely used cross-platform instant messaging app. As valuable and as interchangeable as text messages, WhatsApp messages can house some of our most important data and images. It can be devastating to lose something so important, but we can help you get your deleted WhatsApp messages back.

It is important to create regular backups of your iOS devices, including your iPhone, using either iCloud or iTunes. Backups can be made via these Apple services and then restored to your phone. If you accidentally delete or lose data, data can be restored to your device from a backup file. If your iPhone has been lost or stolen, you can use a backup file and backup extractor tool to view your WhatsApp chats. In fact, for some applications on your phone, recovering deleted data can be very difficult if you do not have a backup file available. To help recover lost or deleted WhatsApp messages on an iPhone, you can use a third-party tool, such as Enigma Recovery software.

To find out how you can retrieve deleted WhatsApp messages, keep reading our tutorials below:

Method 1: How to Restore delete WhatsApp messages from WhatsApp iCloud backup

If you have just deleted or lost WhatsApp data, you are probably concerned about how you will be able to recover your deleted chat history. Our first method will help you recover deleted WhatsApp messages directly from your device and does not require iTunes or a computer.

As a WhatsApp user on an iOS mobile device, you can choose to back up WhatsApp messages and attachments to your iCloud account on your device. This will ensure that when you complete an iCloud backup – which usually happens when your device is plugged into a power source and connected to Wi-Fi – your WhatsApp chat history will be included.

This option is the best solution for iOS users who either do not have an iTunes backup or users who want to restore their WhatsApp messages without a full device restore. However, it is important to note that this process will overwrite all your WhatsApp chat history sent or received since your last backup and replace it with the WhatsApp database from your iPhone backup. If you want to try and avoid this, please read Method 2 and Method 3 for recovery of specific WhatsApp messages.

  1. On your device, navigate to WhatsApp -> Settings -> Chats -> Chat Backup.

  2. You should see the date and size of your last backup. Once you are sure that backup is available, and that includes the messages you need to recover (check the date and timestamp for the backup), then proceed to Step 3. If you cannot see a backup file or are worried that the available backup would not include your lost or deleted messages, please skip ahead to Method 2.

  3. Delete and reinstall WhatsApp from the App Store. You will need to verify your phone number and then follow the on-screen prompts to restore your WhatsApp chat history.

Method 2: How to Retrieve deleted WhatsApp messages from an iCloud backup file

If you were not able to find your deleted messages directly from WhatsApp, or you do not want to do a full restore of your WhatsApp database, which would overwrite any more recent messages since your last backup, you can still use Enigma Recovery, third-party software which will help you recover from your iCloud backup file.

If you created a backup of your phone to iCloud, saving your WhatsApp messages before they were deleted, you can retrieve and extract these lost messages right here.

Step 1 – Download Enigma Recovery

Using your laptop or computer, download the Enigma Recovery iPhone data recovery software from this website. The initial free download will allow you to view the number of WhatsApp messages that can be recovered. You will need to unlock the software to view all messages and export data.

Method 3: How to Recover deleted WhatsApp Messages from an iTunes backup file

If you were not using the Chat Backup feature in WhatsApp, or do not have an iCloud backup file available, you can scan an iPhone backup created through iTunes (or Finder if you are using Mac OS X 10.15 or later) to find your deleted WhatsApp messages. Syncing your iPhone with iTunes or Finder when it is connected to your Mac or Windows computer will automatically include WhatsApp messages in an iPhone backup file.

You can carry out a full device restore using this backup file, however, this will overwrite any data that has been added to your device since the iPhone backup was completed, which could mean a significant amount of additional data loss to get deleted WhatsApp messages back on your device. To ensure that you can extract your WhatsApp messages and attachments, including photos and videos, without additional data loss follow this method, using Enigma Recovery:

Step 1 – Download Enigma Recovery

Download the Enigma Recovery free trial. The application is compatible with both Windows and Mac computers.

    Hi Sarah,

I have tried to recover my deleted messages with your app, trial version using your Method 2. It was a conversation with a friend that I wanted to retrieve. However I could only retrieve messages as of 14 Sept 2018.
So I tried with “Recovering deleted WhatsApp messages straight from iPhone” by connecting my phone to my laptop via a cable. Now, I am asked to unlock to continue. Before I buy your package, i wanted to make sure that I would be able to retrieve this past conversation, as this is the only thing I need, it will become expensive for me if it wouldnt work.
FYI I didnt delete the Whatsapp conversation by accident. I did it purposedly and now I regret it.
    Could you please advise?
    Thank you

    • Hi Thanh,

Thanks for your message! When recovering deleted WhatsApp messages directly from an iPhone, our software is compatible with WhatsApp versions below 2.16.3 only, due to the introduction of encrypted messages on WhatsApp. We would advise that you first check your WhatsApp version to ensure it is compatible, before purchasing. If you are using a WhatsApp version above 2.16.3, it is unlikely deleted data will be recovered. In addition, our free trial version of Enigma Recovery will show you a limited selection of any deleted WhatsApp messages that have been found. It would be helpful to check through the data that is shown in the free trial, to check if deleted WhatsApp messages have been recovered from your device. If you are unable to recover from the device or from the WhatsApp app itself, you can also try to recover the data from an iTunes or iCloud backup, if you have either of these available.

      Hope this helps!

Hi I’m prince I want to recover my watsaap chat from a particular contact from April 2018. I couldn’t find it in the iCloud backup. Will I be able to recover if it’s not in the I cloud back up. Is it free or do I hav to pay to download enigma recovery.

    • Hello Prince,

Thanks for your message. If you are unable to find your WhatsApp message in your iCloud backup, the next best option would be to recover it from an iTunes backup instead, if you have one available. We do offer a free trial of the Enigma Recovery software – with the trial, you can scan a device and/or backup file and get a preview of the deleted data that the software has found before you purchase.

Hope this helps, please let us know if you have any other questions!

    Hi there,

May I know whether I can recover my deleted whatsapp messages after I uninstalling the WhatsApp app the installed it back? Really need your help urgently.

    Thank You.

    • Shaazia at 4:41 pm

      Hello N.N

Thanks for your message. Based on the situation you describe, it sounds as though the best option for recovery would be if you have an iTunes or iCloud backup file available, then you can use one of these to find your messages. I would advise that you first download the free trial of our Enigma Recovery software and use that to perform a scan. With the free version, you will be able to find out if the software has been able to find any of your messages, before upgrading to the full version.

      Hope this helps!
