How to Recover Deleted Contacts on iPhone X/XS/XR/8/7/6/5/4

Lost or Deleted Contacts on your iPhone? Keep reading to find out how to get them back

Although having a phone number is no longer the only form of contacting someone, contact numbers are still highly relevant. Popular apps like Snapchat, WhatsApp, and Facebook all allow the addition of contacts through saved numbers, and for all those who still love a good phone call, your contacts will be very important indeed! Deleting an important contact’s details, or even worse, losing all of your iPhone contacts can be an incredibly stressful time. This can happen if you accidentally delete contacts, or delete a contact’s information thinking you no longer need it and then realise that you do. You could even lose contacts through a failed upgrade or sync. The good news, however, is that once you have pressed deleted, there are some actions you can take to find those deleted items again. Whatever the cause of data loss, you will still be able to recover your deleted iPhone contacts.

Recovering deleted contacts can be done in many ways, depending on how you lost your data and whether you have been taking precautions, through regular device backups, to minimise the damage of data loss. The options available to you include:

Option 1: Recover Deleted Contacts straight from iPhone

By now you’re aware that you stand a very good chance of being able to recover your deleted iPhone contacts, but you may still be concerned that you need a backup file from iTunes or iCloud to find your lost contacts. However, with a third-party iPhone data recovery program, like Enigma Recovery, you will be able to retrieve deleted iPhone contacts directly from your device, without a backup. Enigma Recovery software has been built for anyone to use to recover iPhone data. It successfully extracts and revives deleted items like text messages, contacts and notes from the database of your iPhone for the purpose of recovery.

Restore Deleted Contacts through iCloud restore

One of the options for backing up your iPhone to iCloud is to include contacts as part of the backup. This means that whenever you back up your phone to iCloud, either automatically or manually, contacts will be included in the backup and can be used as a method to restore deleted contacts. It’s important to note that for this option to work, you must have an iCloud backup available, which includes the data that you are trying to recover.

Please note that this method will carry out a full restore of your iCloud backup, and as a result will rewrite your contacts to the latest version from your iCloud backup – this could mean that you lose any contacts that you have added since your last backup. To regain lost contacts by restoring in iCloud follow the steps below. This tutorial will rewrite old numbers in your Contacts app.

  1. Visit iCloud.com

Using your USB cable, connect the iPhone to your computer or laptop.

  2. Visit contacts app.

Click onto the Contacts app that appears to see whether the deleted contacts you are looking for can be found here. If they are here this means that the contacts that you have lost were backed up during your last iCloud backup. If this is the case, proceed with this tutorial.

  3. Open Settings and turn off Contacts

On your iPhone, go to Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Turn off Contacts > Keep on My iPhone

  4. Turn on Contacts

Now turn on Contacts again and select the Merge option. The entire contacts list from iCloud will now overwrite your current iPhone contacts list. If you have created any contacts since your last iCloud backup, they will be overwritten so you will need to add these again.

Restore Deleted Contacts through iTunes backup

You can also restore deleted contacts to your iPhone by restoring an older iTunes backup. If you backed up your phone to iTunes before your contacts were deleted, they will still be available in this backup on your computer. This process, however, will overwrite any new data that had been made or received to your iPhone since you last backed up to iTunes.

  1. Open iTunes on your laptop or computer

Grab your laptop or computer and open iTunes on your desktop.

  2. Connect iPhone to laptop or computer

Connect the iPhone to your Mac or PC using a USB cable. Now, wait for iTunes to recognise your device.

  3. Find ‘Restore backup’

Once iTunes has recognised your phone, find the ‘Restore Backup’ option. You will be able to see the date of your last backup under the ‘Latest Backup’ section. This process will restore your iPhone with all of the data from this backup. Any data made since your last backup will be overwritten.

  4. Keep device connected

Make sure your device stays connected to the computer during the process. After the device restarts itself, it will re-sync with the computer. After this, it is safe to disconnect.
