With the fast-growing adoption of mobile devices over desktop, tablet and mobile browsing have now surpassed computer browsing. With Safari being the default browser on iOS devices, it probably holds most of your internet history. If you have accidentally deleted your browser history or you are struggling to find a website you have previously visited, keep reading to find out how you can recover it.
- Method 1: Check your device for deleted Safari History
- Method 2: Restore Deleted Safari History from an iTunes, Finder, or iCloud backup
- Method 3: Retrieve Deleted Safari Internet History without a backup
- Method 4: Retrieve Deleted Safari Internet History from iTunes or Finder
- Method 5: Retrieve Deleted Safari Internet History from iCloud
Method 1: Check your device for deleted Safari History
If you cannot find your Safari browsing history, the first place to look for it is on your device itself. On your iPhone, tap on the ‘Bookmark’ icon at the bottom of an open Safari tab, and then tap the clock icon – your browsing history will be listed here. If you cannot find your internet history here, you can also check the Settings on your device by following the steps below:
- Go to ‘Settings’ on your device
- Scroll down and select ‘Safari’
- Scroll and select ‘Advanced’ towards the bottom of the screen
- Select ‘Website Data’
- Select ‘Show All Sites’ and use the search functionality to help you
However, this method will only show you the root domain of the sites you visited. If you need to find a specific page or pages, then we recommend you keep reading, as the methods below will allow you to find your full browsing history by page.
Method 2: Restore Deleted Safari History from an iTunes, Finder, or iCloud backup
When you sync your iPhone to iTunes, Finder, or iCloud, Safari history and bookmarks are included in the backup. By restoring the backup file to your device, you can get your internet history back. However, there is a potential downside to this approach – it will replace all the additional data on your device that has been created since your last backup.
To recover your Safari history without any additional data loss or the need to restore your device, you can use a data recovery tool, like Enigma Recovery, which will allow you to extract data from your device, iTunes/Finder or iCloud. Keep reading to find out more.
Enigma Recovery® Recover deleted Safari Internet History
Recover deleted messages, contacts, calls and more from iPhone or iPad.
Method 3: Retrieve Deleted Safari Internet History without a backup
If you have not been creating regular backups of your device, or you do not have a backup file with the Internet History that you need to recover, you can still get your data back, using Enigma Recovery. This method will also ensure that you do not need to make any changes to your device or lose any more data that was recently added to your device. If you are using iOS 13, you will need to first ensure that iTunes is set up to encrypt backups for Enigma Recovery to recover your deleted data directly from your iPhone.
Step 1 – Download Enigma Recovery
Download the free trial of Enigma Recovery software and install it on your Mac or PC.
Step 2 – Connect your iPhone
Connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC, using a USB cable. If you are using iOS 12 or below, skip straight to Step 6. If you have iOS 13 or higher installed on your iPhone, continue to the next step.
Step 3 – Launch iTunes
Open iTunes on your Mac or PC, making sure you have the latest version. If you are using Mac OS X Catalina 10.15 or later, open Finder.
Step 4 – Check for Encrypted Backups
On the Device Summary screen (or the ‘General’ tab in Finder), check if the ‘Encrypt iPhone backup’ option is selected. If it is, skip ahead to Step 6.
Step 5 – Turn on Encrypted Backups
Under the ‘Automatically Back Up’ heading, click ‘This Computer’ and then click ‘Encrypt iPhone backup’. You will be prompted to set a password that will be used to encrypt your iPhone backups – make sure this is a unique, but memorable password that you will not forget! Once you have set a password, iTunes may try to initiate a backup of your device – if it does, allow this to finish and then move on to Step 6.
Step 6 – Start Scan
In the Enigma Recovery software, select the data type that you need to scan, in this case, ‘Safari’ and then click ‘Start Scan’.
Step 7 – View recovered Safari Internet History
Once the scan is complete, you will be able to view your recovered Safari Internet History in full.
Step 8 – Save Safari Internet History
You can save recovered Safari history to your computer in a CSV, XML, PDF or XLSL file format.
Method 4: Retrieve Deleted Safari Internet History from iTunes or Finder
If you have a Finder or iTunes backup created before you deleted the Safari Internet history you need to recover, you can also use Enigma Recovery software to extract data directly from the backup file. This can also be used to select specific browsing history to recover, rather than needing to restore all Safari history.
Step 1 – Download Enigma Recovery
Grab your PC or Mac and download Enigma Recovery from this website. Install and open the software to the start screen.
Step 2 – Select ‘Recover from my iTunes’
From the side menu, select ‘Recover from my iTunes’ and the software will display all the iTunes and Finder backup files you can retrieve data from.
Step 3 – Choose a backup file
Select the backup file that you want to retrieve data from. Use the date column to help you decide which one to choose.
Step 4 – Select ‘Safari’ and scan
Select ‘Safari’ from the data set menu and start the scan to retrieve your lost Safari internet history. The scan time will depend on how much data is contained in your backup.
Step 5 – View retrieved Safari history
After the scan, you will be able to view retrieved Safari internet history, in the ‘Safari’ tab.
Step 6 – Save results
You can save the results of your scan by using the ‘Export & Restore’ option. ‘Export & Restore’ > ‘Export to desktop’ > Select location ‘Browse’ > ‘Export’.
Method 5: Retrieve Deleted Safari Internet History from iCloud
Enigma Recovery software can also be used to retrieve deleted Safari Internet History from iCloud if you have an available backup file. Similarly, to Method 4, this can be used to recover specific data items directly from your backup file.
Step 1 – Download Enigma Recovery
Grab your PC or Mac and download Enigma Recovery from this website. Install the free trial and open the software to the start screen.
Step 2 – Select ‘Recover from my iCloud’
From the side menu to the left, select ‘Recover from my iCloud’.
Step 3 – Log in to iCloud
Follow the instructions that appear to log into your iCloud account. The login will be the most secure as it will offer two-factor authentication. The software will not save your login details during this process.
Step 4 – Select backup file
The software will display all the backup files found in your iCloud account. Select the backup file that you would like to scan for your ‘Safari’ history.
Step 5 – Scan for ‘Safari’ history
Select ‘Safari’ from the data recovery list and proceed to scan the backup file for your ‘Safari’ internet history.
Step 6 – View Safari internet history
After the software has finished scanning your iCloud backup, you will be able to view your internet history in the ‘Safari’ tab.
Step 7 – Save data
You will be able to save the results from the scan, your internet history, through the ‘Export & Restore’ option. ‘Export & Restore’ > ‘Export to desktop’ > Select folder location ‘Browse’ > ‘Export’.
