Every time you sync your iPhone to iTunes, by default, it creates a backup file that is saved to your computer. These files are specifically designed to keep your data safe in-case you damage your iPhone, lose precious files after an iOS upgrade, or if you delete them by mistake. iTunes also comes in handy when you wish to upgrade or restore your iPhone.

If you would like to delete your iPhone backup file to save space or for security measures, you can do so with the instructions below.

This article will teach you how to delete iTunes backup files from your Mac or Windows PC, depending on what operating system you are using.

How to delete iTunes Backup Files from Mac

If you are deleting an old iTunes backup file from your Mac, you should know that there are two ways of doing so. The first is directly from iTunes, the second is by removing the file from its direct location on your Mac.

  • How to delete an iTunes backup file directly from iTunes on Mac

  • To delete a backup from iTunes, first of all you should open the program. Search for the Preferences option and click on it. Now click on Devices, and pick the backup file that you wish to delete. Click on Delete Backup and confirm it.

  • How to delete an iTunes backup file from the Application Folder on Mac

  • Deleting an iTunes backup file from your computer can also be done manually, by deleting them from their direct location. On your Mac, go to this path: ~/Library/ApplicationSupport/MobileSync/Backup. Although the file names might look weird, you can check the date they were created on, to decide which ones to delete.

How to delete iTunes Backup Files from Windows PC

If you are using Windows, deleting iTunes backup files is as easy as it is on Mac.

  • How to delete an iTunes Backup file directly from iTunes on Windows

  • Open iTunes on your Windows computer, and go to Edit, then Preferences. Open the Devices tab and choose the backup file(s) you want to delete. Then click on Delete Backup and confirm.

  • How to delete an iTunes Backup File from the Application Folder on Windows

  • On Windows, searching for the Application Folder is a little more complicated as some of these files can be hidden. The easiest way is to go to this path: users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup.

If you wish to find it manually, click the Start button, and type %appdata% in the search bar. Now press Back, open Apple Computer, MobilySync and finally open Backup. Delete the unwanted backup files.

I wanted to thank you for the information on how to manually find the backup folder location. I read multiple other articles which were of no use. I quickly found and deleted around 120GB’s of useless data, compiled from attempting to backup an iPhone only to get 3/4 of the way done before hitting a “Not Enough Storage” error.
This seems like a glaring and unacceptable error in iTunes programming, as that should be checked and communicated prior to beginning the backup. Thank you very much.
